CRE Use of English Level 2: Complete 2026 Guide | 1,200+ Practice Questions & Exemption Tips

[1] Widely regarded as a important architect of twentieth-century expressionism, the choreographic vocabulary of Martha Graham driven a model shift that reverberated far beyond the traditional confines of the balletic world. [2] Predicated upon the physiological principles of ‘contraction and release,’ the Graham technique eschewed the ethereal lightness of her predecessors, opting instead to generate visceral dramatic tension through movements that emanated from the core. [3] Leveraging her formidable anatomical flexibility, she pioneered a vocabulary of motion rooted in the abdomen and pelvis, effectively redefining the gravitational relationship between the dancer and the floor. [4] Graham’s oeuvre represented a dual repudiation: she rejected not only the rigid tenets of classical ballet but also the emerging, reactionary rebellions of contemporary modernists who lacked her rigorous structural discipline. [5] This synthesis of form and emotion found parallels in the work of contemporaries like Helen Tamiris, yet Graham’s methodology remained uniquely systemic. [6] However, the transition from practitioner to mentor was fraught; upon her involuntary retirement from the stage, Graham succumbed to a significant clinical depression, worsened by the psychological dissonance of witnessing others inhabit her signature roles. [7] Nevertheless, her educational legacy remains unconquerable, with the Graham technique now integrated into the curricula of global conservatories and universities. [8] Absent her transformative intervention, the contemporary landscape of performance art would lack its current psychological depth and moving rigor. Which of the following best captures the primary objective of the passage?
ATo analyse the specific physiological mechanisms of the 'contraction and release' method within modern dance education.
BTo chronicle the psychological challenges and professional decline Graham faced following her retirement from active performance.
CTo evaluate the revolutionary impact of Graham’s choreographic philosophy and its enduring systemic influence on the evolution of dance.
DTo contrast Graham’s rejection of classical balletic tenets with the stylistic rebellions of her contemporaries, Helen Tamiris and Agnes de Mille.
ETo argue that Graham’s primary contribution was the normalization of modern dance within academic and clinical university settings.

The following passage is adapted from a political treatise regarding the nature of civil liberty and the psychological demands of revolution. These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. By the time the present generation [_______] the full price of its complacency, the moment for resistance will already have passed. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods. Which of the following versions of the bracketed portion best maintains correct tense within the 'by the time... will have' construction?
Acomprehends
Bwill comprehend
Ccomprehended
Dwill have comprehended
Ewould comprehend
