Hong Kong Registered Electrical Worker Grade A/B Exam Prep

Prepare for Hong Kong Grade A or Grade B electrical work by choosing the appropriate exam route, then identifying what you need to revise. This page combines official route guidance, original practice and calculation tools. The five foundation questions are not official exam questions or a complete mock exam.

Choose your Grade A or Grade B route

Grade A: Trade Test for Grade A Electrical Work

The Construction Industry Council provides the Grade A trade test. A test certificate, together with the relevant qualifications and experience, can support an application to EMSD for registration. Passing the test and receiving electrical worker registration are separate steps.

Grade B: Examination for Registration as a Grade B Electrical Worker

The HKEAA Grade B examination is a different route. Successful candidates applying for registration must still meet the practical electrical work experience requirements, subject to EMSD assessment. Prepare against the Grade B syllabus; Grade A practice is not a complete Grade B mock.

Use the practice to find your next revision step

  1. Calculate independently before selecting an answer. Check it, then read the working.
  2. Identify errors in the formula, units or algebra, then retry the questions you missed.
  3. Change a value in the calculator and check how the result changes.

The three-phase calculator uses line quantities and assumes a balanced, sinusoidal load. Understand those conditions before comparing line and phase quantities. The output is not an installation design.

Route sources checked on 1 October 2026. Check official announcements for current dates and requirements. This page does not provide a complete Grade B mock.

Five original electrical theory questions

Review foundation calculations. These are original questions, not official questions or a complete Grade A/B mock. Answers are handled only on this page.

0 / 5

1. A resistor has 12 V across it and carries 2 A. What is its resistance?

2. A 230 V ideal resistive load draws 4 A. What is its power?

3. A 0.8 kW load runs for 2.5 hours. How much energy is used?

4. Two resistors of 5 Ω and 7 Ω are in series. Find total resistance.

5. Two equal 10 Ω resistors are in parallel. Find total resistance.

Three-phase power calculator

For a balanced, sinusoidal three-phase load: enter line-to-line voltage and line current. Power factor is cos φ in this model.

Line/phase quantities and three worked examples

For a star connection, line voltage is √3 times phase voltage, while line current equals phase current. P = √3 × Vline × Iline × PF, or P = 3 × Vphase × Iphase × PF. Keep line and phase quantities separate.

  • 400 V, 10 A, PF 0.8 → P ≈ 5.543 kW, S ≈ 6.928 kVA, Q ≈ 4.157 kvar.
  • 400 V, 10 A, PF 1 → P ≈ 6.928 kW, S ≈ 6.928 kVA, Q = 0 kvar.
  • P = 12 kW, V = 400 V, PF 0.8 → I ≈ 21.651 A.

These theory tools do not select cables, protection or installation ratings. Unbalanced or distorted loads need another model. Power definitions source
